On 8th April 2025, registration for the 52-day yatra opened through specific bank branches. Those who are planning to go on this spiritual pilgrimage must finish the registration process in the allotted time.

Amarnath Yatra Route 2025

The Shri Amarnath Ji Shrine Board (SASB) manages and operates the two main routes for the Amarnath Yatra. The first route is from Pahalgam, which is longer but easier, offering a more relaxed experience. The second route, starting from Baltal, is shorter but more challenging and may not be suitable for everyone. Both routes provide breathtaking views of snow-capped mountains, making the journey an unforgettable adventure.

Depending on your preference, you can choose to travel by air, train, or bus. The nearest airport is Srinagar Airport, located 72 km from the Amarnath Cave Temple. The closest railway station is Jammu Tawi, about 176 km away. From Jammu, buses operated by private agencies or State Transport services are available to reach both Pahalgam and Baltal.

Route 1: Baltal to Amarnath Route

This 14-kilometer route in the Ganderbal district can be completed in one or two days, but it’s not recommended for novices because it has steep inclines and descents, challenging terrain, and energy-draining shortcuts. For those who are youthful, physically active, and looking for some excitement during their religious journey, this is the greatest way. The Yatra Access Control Gate is situated at Domail, while the base camp for this route is situated in Baltal, close to Sonamarg, some 95 km away from Srinagar by car.

Route Map: Baltal – Domali – Barari – Sangam – Amarnath Cave

You can make your first stop in Domali, which is roughly two kilometres into your trip, after starting from Baltal. Continue travelling the remaining 6 km to Barari. After a quick rest here, you can continue on for 4 km to Sangam, your next stopping point.

By the time you reach Sangam, you will have travelled around 80% of the way, and the Amarnath Cave is only 2 kilometres away.

Route 2: Pahalgam to Amarnath Route

The second route, spanning 45 kilometers, starts from Pahalgam and typically takes four to five days to complete. Compared to the Baltal route, this longer walk is preferred by many due to its breathtaking scenery, better enroute facilities, and relatively easier terrain.

As you walk along this path, you will be mesmerized by the meandering Lidder and Aru Rivers, surrounded by towering mountains. Pilgrims make overnight stops at the Yatra base camp, located in Nunwan, approximately six miles from Pahalgam.

Though there are several campsites along the route, it’s advisable to reach Chandanwari before the second night. Minibuses operate between Pahalgam and Chandanwari, covering a distance of 16 kilometers.

From Chandanwari, you’ll begin an ascent to Pissu Top, the next stop on your journey.

Afterward, the trek continues toward Sheshnag Lake, a significant stop for pilgrims to take a dip. This 13-kilometer hike to Sheshnag involves a challenging climb, and from there, the 4.6-kilometer journey to Panchtarni includes a tough ascent and descent over the 14,000-foot Mahagunas Pass. Due to the high altitude, you may experience nausea and difficulty breathing.

Advice for the Amarnath Yatra 2025: Dos and Don’ts

To ensure a safe and smooth pilgrimage, pilgrims are advised to follow these essential guidelines:

• Obtain a Medical Certificate: Get a medical certificate from a facility or doctor approved by your state. This is a mandatory requirement for registration.
• Photo Requirements: Ensure your photo is in JPEG or JPG format and under 1MB in size for registration.
• Upload Medical Certification: Upload your medical certificate in PDF format, ensuring the file size does not exceed 1MB during registration.
• Age Restrictions: Pilgrims should be between 13 and 70 years old. Anyone outside this age range is not allowed to undertake the journey.
• Pregnancy Restrictions: Women who are more than six weeks pregnant are not permitted to participate in the yatra.
• Carry Original Documents: Always carry your original photo ID and medical certificate with you during the yatra for verification purposes.

• The first come, first served policy will apply to registration.
• To receive the yatra permit, each yatri must submit an application form, a compulsory health certificate (CHC), and the necessary documentation.

Role of the Board

The following roles and responsibilities have been assigned to Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB) as per section 16 of the Act:

• To arrange for the proper performance of worship at the Holy Shrine.
• To make arrangements for the safe custody of the funds, valuable and jewelry and for the preservation of the Board Fund.
• To undertake developmental activities concerning the areas of the shrine and its surroundings.
• To make provision for the payment of suitable emoluments to the salaried staff.
• To make suitable arrangements for the imparting of religious instruction and general education to the pilgrims.
• To undertake for the benefit of worshippers and pilgrims:

1. The construction of buildings for their accommodation
2. The construction of sanitary works; and
3. The improvement of means of communication

• To make provision of medical relief for worshippers and pilgrims
• To do all such things as may be incidental and conducive to the efficient management, maintenance and administration of the Holy Shrine and the Board Funds and for the convenience of the pilgrims.

How to Reach Amarnath Yatra 2025 

• The Holy Amarnathji Shrine is located in Kashmir Himalayas. It can be reached through either of the two routes viz around 32 km long Pahalgam route or around 14 km long Baltal route.
• Yatra base camp for Baltal route is located at Baltal (near Sonamarg) in Ganderbal District. Baltal is around 95 km from Srinagar via road.
• Yatra base camp for Pahalgam route is located at Nunwan (near Pahalgam) in Anantnag District. Nunwan is around 90 km from Srinagar via road.
• Yatra Access Control Gate on Baltal route is located at Domail (at the distance of around 2.5 km from Baltal).
• Yatra Access Control Gate on Pahalgam route is located at Chandanwari (at a distance of around 12 kmm from Nunwan).

• The pilgrimage to Holy Cave of Shri Amarnathji involves trekking at altitudes as high as 14800 feet.
• Yatris may develop High Altitude Sickness with following symptoms: loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, weakness, dizziness, lightheadedness and difficulty in sleeping, visual impairment, bladder dysfunction, bowel dysfunction, loss of coordination of movements, paralysis on one side of the body, gradual loss of consciousness and mental status changes, drowsiness, chest tightness, fullness, congestion, fast breathing and increased heart rate.
• If high altitude sickness is not treated timely, it may be fatal in a matter of hours.

ABOUT SHRI AMARNATHJI SHRINE BOARD

The Shri Amarnathji Shrine is one of the most revered pilgrimage sites for Hindus, dedicated to Lord Shiva, and attracts millions of devotees each year. Pilgrims undertake the challenging journey to the Holy Cave Shrine in the Kashmir Himalayas during the months of June to August to offer their prayers to the Holy Ice Lingam.
